"Donna Dodson: Match of the Matriarchs and other Amazonomachies" is the first solo exhibition by a female artist hosted by the World Chess Hall of Fame (WCHOF). The show, which centers on women’s stories, women’s lives, and their place in the history of chess, includes Dodson’s monumental, life-sized chess set “Match of the Matriarchs,” which contains 32-large scale wooden sculptures representing all-female representations of cephalopods battling cetaceans.

RSVP now for a curator-led tour of the World Chess Hall of Fame's current exhibition, "1972 Fischer/Spassky: The Match, Its Origin, and Influence." 

The exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the American Robert "Bobby" Fischer's historic win over the Russian Boris Spassky in the legendary 1972 World Chess Championship, ending 24 years of Soviet dominance in the sport. The show features more than 500 artifacts, including chess pieces used in pivotal game three of the "Match of the Century," a replica of the tournament table created by the makers of the original and never-before-exhibited books from the personal library of Bobby Fischer. The exhibition also highlights pieces from the World Chess Hall of Fame collection, loans from the Fischer Library of U.S. Chess Hall of Fame Inductees Dr. Jeanne Cairns Sinquefield & Rex Sinquefield and from photojournalist and Fischer confidant Harry Benson CBE and recently-donated artwork by the LeRoy Neiman & Janet Byrne Neiman Foundation.

Celebrate our Nation’s independence with entertainment, family fun, and snacks during the annual Central West End Association (CWEA) Fourth of July Parade!

Line up with neighbors, jugglers, and unicyclists at Euclid and McPherson Avenues around 9:45 a.m. Wave flags, shake beads, and sing songs as we march down the street to Maryland Avenue, then enjoy complimentary popcorn, snow cones, face painters, and balloon twisters at the Maryland Plaza Fountain until noon. This event is free and open to the public.

Friday, April 3rd at 5pm will be the Central West End's Essential Worker Appreciation Happy Hour. At 5pm CWE residents are encouraged to raise a glass and make some noise from their homes in appreciation of health care workers, restaurant owners, delivery drivers, truck drivers, grocery store attendants, postal workers, bankers, police officers, first responders and any essential workers striving to keep our community supplied and healthy during this critical time. 

Join the Central West End Association in celebrating these essential workers by raising a glass from your porch, beating a drum from your balcony, shaking a tambourine from your window, clanging pots and pans or generally causing a ruckus in appreciating those who help our neighborhood stay healthy and safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.  

Please share with your neighbors so we can celebrate together while we stay home & at a safe distance.

During the school year, Heidi Kehle (one of our wonderful preschool teachers), shares her stories and musical magic through Story Time each month from 9:30 - 11:00 am in the New City School Library. Stories and activities are designed for children from infant/toddler through second grade. Saturday Story Time is free and snacks are provided. The college is presenting “The Vagina Monologues” by Eve Ensler for the very first time this Friday, Feb 28 at 7pm in the auditorium located on the campus. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door or through Eventbrite. All proceeds made from ticket sales and dessert sales are going to Lydia’s House, a local organization to help domestic abused women.

On Tuesday, February 25, join in the Central West End Second Line Parade, led by Saint Boogie Brass Band and Annie and the Fur Trappers. Meet at the intersection of Euclid and Washington at 5:30 p.m. After parading through the neighborhood, continue the festivities at one of the CWE's amazing restaurants or bars. Check back for a list of participating businesses and specials. Grab your friends and family and celebrate Fat Tuesday in style, right here in the Central West End. Prizes will be awarded for “Best Dressed” during the event.
